How to Layer Your Serums Correctly

The order you apply your products matters. Here's the simple rule that makes everything absorb better.

You've invested in great serums — but are you applying them in the right order? Layering correctly is the difference between products that work and products that pill. Here's how to get it right.

The Golden Rule: Thin to Thick

The simplest rule in skincare: apply products from thinnest to thickest consistency. Watery toners and essences first, then lightweight serums, then richer creams and oils. This lets each layer absorb properly before the next one seals it in.

Water Before Oil

Water-based products can't penetrate an oil layer, but oils can sit happily on top of water-based ones. So always apply water-based serums like hyaluronic acid or vitamin C before any oil-based products or facial oils.

Give Each Layer a Moment

You don't need to wait ten minutes between steps, but a short pause helps. Let each serum absorb for thirty seconds or so before the next. This reduces pilling and gives actives time to sink in rather than mixing on the surface.

Don't Overdo It

More serums isn't always better. Two or three well-chosen actives are plenty for most routines. Piling on five different serums can irritate skin and cause ingredients to cancel each other out — keep it focused and let each one shine.
